As Johanna will tell you, I have two children and they are both autistic. Gillian, almost 6, fully understands the function of a toilet and potty, and does a pretty good job of using the potty on her own. She has never understood the "get help" part of potty training. At this point she is even pretty good at wiping with a diaper wipe, but I can't let her use the actual toilet alone. We live in an apartment and the water gets quite hot, so the bathroom is "locked" for the kids safety. If the potty is for some reason not out then she will soil herself and THEN come to me for assistance in cleaning up.
Also, this potty using is only at home. Gillian is petrified, and I mean petrified, of the sound of a toilet flush outside our home. In public, and at school, she is still in diapers. It could be worse for me. At least she has come this far.
